《새로운 태양들》(2024/2025–)은 기존 문법 너머의 감각과 언어, 그리고 서로 다른 위치에서 발화되는 목소리들이 교차하는 장을 만들고, 그 안에서 예술, 교육, 사회를 함께 사유하고 실험하고자 시작된 배움 생태계이자 과정 중심의 공동체 예술 프로젝트입니다. 우리는 배움이 서로 다른 경험과 시선이 만나는 자리에서, 단순한 정보의 교환을 넘어 자신을 세우고 타자와의 관계 속에서 공동체로 확장되는 과정이라 믿습니다. 이러한 관계 속에서 형성되는 배움의 조건을 살피고, 그것이 지속될 수 있는 토대를 함께 만들어가고자 합니다.

이 프로젝트는 해마다 공동체를 모으고 매개하는 새로운 의제를 제시합니다. 2025년 ‘이동(mobility)’이 물리적 이동을 넘어, 이주, 자본, 데이터, 정체성의 변화까지 다양한 층위에서 이동의 조건과 그 불균형을 질문하며 관계의 지형을 탐색했다면, 2026년은 ‘앎(knowing/knowledge)’의 여정을 시작합니다. 여기서 앎은 지식을 축적하는 행위가 아니라, 스스로를 돌아보고 자신의 위치와 감각을 인식하며 그것을 타자와 나누는 과정입니다. 이러한 과정이 개인을 넘어 함께하는 실천으로 이어질 때, 배움은 하나의 문화이자 공동체를 조직하는 힘이 됩니다. 따라서 중요한 것은 무엇을 배우는가가 아니라, 그 과정 속에서 어떻게 성찰하고, 나누며, 함께 변화해 가는가입니다. 우리는 이러한 앎을 통해 자신과 공동체를 새롭게 조직하는 실천을 제안합니다.

이러한 배경에는 오늘날 교육과 예술 실천이 마주한 현실이 자리하고 있습니다. 제도적 교육 안에서 배움은 평가와 경쟁의 논리에 의해 제한되며, 이러한 구조는 학교를 넘어 예술 현장에서도 반복되고 재생산됩니다. 배움과 창작의 과정에서 형성되어야 할 개인의 언어와 감각은 종종 후순위로 밀려나고, 예술 또한 결과 중심의 생산으로 쉽게 환원되곤 합니다. 우리는 이러한 조건 속에서 배움의 과정을 다시 중심에 놓고, 이를 개인과 공동체의 차원에서 새롭게 만들어가고자 합니다. 이러한 관점은 벨 훅스(bell hooks)가 『경계 넘기를 가르치기(Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom)』(1994)에서 파울로 프레이리(Paulo Freire)의 프락시스(praxis)를 바탕으로 제안한 배움의 개념과도 맞닿아 있습니다. 프락시스는 성찰과 실천이 끊임없이 순환하며 서로를 변화시키는 과정으로, 앎이 삶과 분리되지 않고 현실을 변화시키는 힘이 될 수 있음을 말합니다. 우리는 이러한 앎의 과정을 개인과 공동체를 새롭게 만들어가는 하나의 예술적 실천으로 이해합니다. 예술은 단지 완성된 결과물을 생산하는 데 그치지 않습니다. 서로 다른 사람들이 만나 질문을 만들고, 자신의 감각과 경험을 다시 바라보며, 새로운 관계를 형성하고 그 관계가 지속될 수 있는 조건을 마련하는 일 또한 예술의 중요한 실천입니다. 그런 의미에서 교육과 예술은 서로 다른 영역이라기보다, 배움을 통해 자신과 공동체를 변화시키고 함께 성장시키는 실천으로 만납니다.

새로운 태양들 2026 《앎의 여정: 사랑, 흥, 유머 실천》은 6월부터 약 4개월 동안 여섯 명의 태양들(모윤서, 이반지하, 있다, 정혜정, 조호연, 한솔)과 네 명의 기획팀(김재아, 박가희, 박선재, 최태윤)이 함께 캠프, 오픈 스튜디오, 오픈 아카이브 전시를 이어오며 배움과 실천의 여정을 함께 만들어온 프로젝트입니다.

4일간의 캠프에서 태양들과 기획진은 먼저 각자가 걸어온 실천과 배움의 여정을 공유하고, 그것이 지금 이 자리에서 ‘앎의 여정’과 어떻게 만나는지, 또 이 과정을 통해 무엇을 기대하는지를 함께 이야기했습니다. 이와 함께 외부 강연자와 게스트를 초대해 대화와 실천을 확장하는 시간도 가졌습니다. 최빛나의 강연에서는 사랑을 예술과 사회적 변화를 이끄는 실천의 원리로 살펴보았고, 포킹룸(최빛나)과는 서로 다른 방향으로 분기되는 공동체의 가능성을, 에스더 루와는 휴식과 탈성장을 배움의 한 방식으로 사유했습니다. 김이슬의 움직임 워크숍과 박민희의 음악 워크숍에서는 몸과 감각, 리듬을 통해 서로의 작업을 이해하고 함께 움직이는 경험을 나누었습니다. 또한, 캠프의 중심에는 유은과 함께한 커리큘럼 워크숍이 있었습니다. 태양들은 각자가 지닌 조건과 고민을 새로운 질문과 가능성으로 전환하고, 이후 이어질 오픈 스튜디오를 위한 커리큘럼을 구상했습니다. 이 시간을 관통한 질문은 ‘앎의 여정을 누구와, 어떻게 함께 할 수 있는가’였습니다. 무엇을 전달할 것인가뿐 아니라 누구와 만나고, 서로에게 무엇을 배우며, 그러한 배움이 일어나기 위해 어떤 관계와 조건이 필요한가를 함께 고민했습니다.

이후 태양들의 앎의 여정은 각자의 작업과 리서치를 바탕으로 일주일씩 이어진 릴레이 형식의 오픈 스튜디오에서 (유사) 전시, 워크숍, 대화, 퍼포먼스, 낭독, 파티 등 다양한 방식으로 실험되었으며, 참여자들과의 만남 속에서 끊임없이 수정되고 확장되었습니다. 있다는 길 위에서 채집한 소리와 글을 관객의 발화에 열어두며 ‘듣는 마음이 일어나는 순간’을 탐구했고, 이반지하는 20년에 걸친 그림들을 한 공간에 다시 불러내 과거의 작업과 현재의 자신이 서로를 다시 읽도록 했습니다. 모윤서는 달토끼와 천기·지기·인기를 경유해 몸과 음악, 돌봄과 서식지의 관계를 탐색했고, 한솔은 타인의 이야기를 기록해 온 카메라를 자신에게 돌려 아카이브와 작가 윤리, 스스로 말하기의 방법을 다시 물었습니다. 정혜정은 조형물을 만드는 작업에서 한 걸음 나아가 머물고 쉬며 손을 움직이는 관계의 공간을 열었고, 조호연은 가르치는 사람과 배우는 사람의 자리를 뒤집으며 예술가이자 교육자로 살아가는 자신의 경험을 공동의 질문으로 확장했습니다.

이 과정에서 태양들은 서로에게 협업자가 되어주고, 핵심을 꿰뚫는 질문자가 되었으며, 서로의 여정을 정성스러운 눈으로 바라보는 목격자가 되어주기도 했습니다. 작업의 대상과 형식, 관객의 위치, 예술가 자신의 역할을 다시 묻는 변화가 각자의 오픈 스튜디오 안에서 구체화되기도 했습니다. 그렇게 사랑은 서로를 향해 관계를 여는 힘으로, 흥은 함께 움직이게 하는 공동체의 에너지로, 유머는 긴장을 풀고 서로를 다른 감각을 연결하는 언어로 작동했습니다. 그리고 실천은 이러한 배움과 변화가 일회성 경험에 머무르지 않고 삶 속에서 이어지는 방식이 되었습니다. 사랑, 흥, 유머 실천이 서로 얽히며 배움은 개인의 경험을 넘어 함께 만들어가는 공동체적 과정으로 확장되었습니다.

지금 여러분이 마주한 오픈 아카이브 전시는 이러한 앎의 여정을 함께 살펴보는 자리입니다. 개별 아카이브 상자에는 리서치의 기록, 대화와 메모, 드로잉과 스케치, 실험의 흔적 등 프로젝트가 진행되는 동안 축적된 시간들이 담겨 있습니다. 이 자료들은 완결된 결과물이 아니라, 배움이 형성되고 변화해 온 여정의 기록입니다. 이 전시는 무엇인가를 완성해 보여주기보다, 태양들의 앎이 지금 어디에 와 있는지, 그리고 앞으로 어디로 이어질 수 있을지를 함께 상상하는 자리입니다.

《새로운 태양들》의 지향은 새로운 교육 모델이나 대안적 학교를 제안하는 데 있지 않습니다. 기존 교육 제도의 효율적인 대안을 제시하려는 것도 아닙니다. 우리는 오히려 배움과 앎이 일어날 수 있는 조건을 만들고, 그 조건을 예술적 형식으로 다루고자 합니다. 서로 다른 경험과 실천을 이어온 사람들이 만나 질문을 만들고, 관계를 맺으며, 자신과 세계를 다시 바라보는 과정 자체가 예술적·정치적 실천이 될 수 있다고 믿습니다. 이 과정이 정치적일 수 있는 것은 스스로를 구성하고, 관계를 조직하며, 공동의 삶을 만들어가는 방식을 새롭게 실험하기 때문입니다. 배움은 해방일 수도, 경계를 넘는 행위일 수도, 차이를 견디는 기술일 수도 있습니다. 중요한 것은 하나의 정의를 제시하는 것이 아니라, 서로 다른 배움의 실천이 만나고 충돌하며 공명할 수 있는 조건을 만드는 일입니다. 이러한 관점에서 《새로운 태양들》은 하나의 전시나 교육 프로그램이 아니라, 배움을 매개로 예술을 실천하는 형식이자 구조입니다. 오픈콜을 통해 참여자를 만나고, 함께 공동체를 형성하며, 캠프와 오픈 스튜디오, 오픈 아카이브를 거쳐 기록을 축적하는 일련의 과정은 그 형식과 구조를 이루는 조형적 구성으로 작동합니다. 이 프로젝트에서 예술은 결과물에만 머무르지 않습니다. 사람들이 만나고 배우고 질문하고 변화하는 과정, 그리고 그것을 가능하게 하는 관계와 시간, 공간, 기록을 조직하는 방식까지 모두 예술의 일부입니다.

새로운 태양들 2026 《앎의 여정: 사랑, 흥, 유머 실천》은 이러한 가능성을 함께 실험하는 장소입니다. 예술적 실천이 배움의 자리가 되고, 배움이 다시 삶과 세계를 새롭게 바라보는 실천으로 이어질 때, 우리는 아직 이름 붙여지지 않은 감각과 관계들이 서로를 비추며 또 다른 태양이 되어가는 순간을 마주하게 될 것입니다.

New Suns 2026 — Knowing Journey: Praxis of Love, Excitement and Humor

New Suns is a community art project and a learning ecosystem where people with diverse positions, sensations, and languages come together to think and experiment with art, education, and society. We believe learning is a process where different experiences and perspectives meet, where we can go beyond the exchange of information to establish ourselves and expand into a community. We seek to examine the conditions of learning formed within these relationships, and to build together the foundation on which they can be sustained.

We present a new agenda each year to bring together a community of practitioners. 2025's theme of "mobility" questioned the concept and conditions of movement, migration, capital, data, and shifts in identity. 2026’s theme is “Knowing Journey.” Here, knowing is not simply the act of accumulating knowledge, but a process of looking back at oneself, recognizing one's position and senses, and sharing that with others. When this process extends beyond the individual and grows into a shared practice, learning becomes a culture and force that organizes a community. What matters, then, is not what one learns, but how one reflects, shares, and changes together in the journey. Through this type of “knowing,” we propose a new practice of organizing oneself and their community.

We must acknowledge the reality that education and artistic practice face today. Within institutional education, learning is constrained by the logic of evaluation and competition, and this structure repeats and reproduces itself in the field of art as well. The unique language and senses that should form through the process of learning and creativity are often pushed aside, and art too is easily reduced to result-oriented production. Within these conditions, we seek to place the process of learning back at the center, and to remake it anew at the level of both the individual and the community. This perspective connects with the concept of learning that bell hooks proposed in Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom (1994), drawing on Paulo Freire's notion of praxis. Praxis is a process in which reflection and action continuously circulate and transform one another, suggesting that knowing, rather than being separate from life, can become a force that changes reality. We understand this process of knowing as an artistic practice that newly creates individuals and communities. Art does not stop after producing a finished result. When different people meet to form questions, reflect on their own senses and experiences, cultivate new relationships, and establish the conditions for those relationships to continue — this too is an important practice of art. In this sense, education and art converge not as separate domains, but as practices that, through learning, transform and grow both self and community together.

New Suns 2026 Knowing Journey: Praxis of Love, Excitement, and Humor is a project in which, over about four months starting in June, six fellows (Yunseo Alexis Moh, Ibanjiha, itta, Jeong Hye Jeong, Hoyeon Cho, Sol Han) and a four-person curatorial team (Jaea Kim, Gahee Park, Sunjae Park, Taeyoon Choi) built a journey of learning and practice together through a camp, open studios, and an open archive exhibition.

We kickstarted the project with a four-day camp, where the fellows and the curatorial team shared their paths of artistic practice and learning, discussing how they connect with the theme of "Knowing Journey" and what they hoped to gain from the process. The camp also included outside speakers and guests who were brought in to expand the conversation and practice further. Binna Choi's talk examined love as a principle of practice that drives art and social change; Forking Room’s talk explored the possibilities of a critical community branching in multiple directions; and Esther Lu’s talk considered rest and degrowth as a way of learning. The camp also included participatory workshops, privately held for the fellows. In Esl Kim's movement workshop and Minhee Park's music workshop, participants shared experiences of understanding one another's work and moving together through body, sense, and rhythm. At the center of the camp was a curriculum workshop led by U-Eun. The fellows transformed their individual conditions and concerns into new questions and possibilities, and conceived the curricula for the open studios that would follow. The question running through this time was: "With whom, and how, can the knowing journey be shared?" They considered not only what to convey, but whom to meet, what to learn from one another, and what relationships and conditions are needed for such learning to take place.

Following the camp, each fellows initiated week-long open studios based on their own work and research, taking various forms — exhibitions, workshops, conversations, performances, readings, and parties. Each open studio followed another one, like a relay, and were continually revised and expanded through encounters with participants. itta explored "the moment when a listening heart arises" by opening sounds and writings gathered along the road to audience speech; Ibanjiha recalled her paintings spanning twenty years into a single space, letting past work to be read anew in the present tense. Yunseo Alexis Moh explored the relationships among body, music, care, and habitat via the Moon Rabbit and the spirits of Heaven, Earth, and Human; Sol Han turned her camera around, which typically recorded others' stories back on herself, for questioning the notion of archive, artistic ethics, and methods of speaking for oneself. Jeong Hye Jeong moved a step beyond her past sculptural work to open a relational space for staying, resting, and moving one's hands; Hoyeon Cho flipped the positions of teacher and learner, expanding her experience of living as both artist and educator into a shared question.

In this process, the fellows became collaborators for one another, questioners who engaged deep into the heart of matters, and witnesses who watched over each other's journeys with careful eyes. Among the topics that were discussed, the questions of the object and form of the artistic work, the audience's position, and the artist's own role took concrete shape within each open studio. In this process, love functioned as a force opening relationships toward one another; excitement, as a communal energy that set people moving together; and humor, as a language that eased tension and connected differing senses. Practice became the way in which this learning and change continued into life rather than remaining a one-time experience. As love, excitement, and humor practice intertwined, learning expanded beyond individual experience into a communal process built together.

The open archive exhibition is a place to publicly experience the “Knowing Journey.” Each individual archive box holds records of research, conversations and notes, drawings and sketches, and traces of experimentation — the accumulated time of the project as it unfolded. These materials are not finished results, but records of a journey in which learning was formed and transformed. Rather than showing something completed, this exhibition is a place to imagine together where the fellows' learning stands now, and where it might lead next.

New Suns's aim is not to simply propose a new educational model or an alternative school, nor to offer an efficient alternative to the existing education system. Instead, we seek to create the conditions under which learning and knowing can occur, and to treat those conditions as an artistic form. We believe that the very process of people who have carried different experiences and practices meeting, forming questions, building relationships, and looking anew at themselves and the world can itself become an artistic and political practice. This process can be political precisely because it experiments with ways of constituting oneself, organizing relationships, and building a shared life. Learning may be liberation, an act of crossing boundaries, or a skill for enduring differences. What matters is not offering a single definition, but creating the conditions under which different practices of learning convene, collide, and resonate with one another. From this perspective, New Suns is not a single exhibition or educational program, but a form and structure that practices art through the medium of learning. The whole sequence of meeting participants through an open call, forming a community together, and accumulating records through the camp, open studios, and open archive operates as the formal and structural composition of that shape. In this project, art does not stop at the finished result. The process of people meeting, learning, questioning, and changing — and the way relationships, time, space, and records are organized to make that process possible — are all part of the art.

New Suns 2026 Knowing Journey: Praxis of Love, Excitement, and Humor is a place to experiment with these possibilities together. When artistic practice becomes a site of learning, and learning in turn becomes a practice of seeing life and the world anew. There, we will encounter the moment when senses and relationships, which are not yet named, illuminate one another and emerge, once again, as new suns.
